a woman is trained in starting, building and running a small business through the Community Development Program in Africa.
These small business help to break the cycle of poverty and provide employment, income and food security to women and their families.
Mary Mwale is from Ndola, Zambia. After attending the community development program, she started making and selling paper jewelry from waste paper. That's how she raised her capital. She then started selling second hand clothes. She bought a cheap piece of land and was able to sell it for a profit. She then bought additional land and built some houses and a shop. She is now a business lady in her community, running a business from her shop.
Bertha is a single mother, raising six children on her own after the death of her husband. After her community development training, she started a small business selling vegetables. From there, Bertha was able to buy a small piece of land. She started growing onions, cabbages, tomatoes and green peppers. The success of her business meant that she was able to send her children to school. Her eldest daughter has recently completed 12th grade and she wants to go to college next year.
Brenda is a widow with 6 children, 3 boys and 3 girls. After the death of her husband, his family took away every thing they had worked for, including the house they built together. After the community development training she started gardening. She struggles sometimes because she only has a small potion of land. She is working towards renting a bigger potion of land for her garden.
